Sustainable Community

WSU partners with community members and organizations in many ways develop strong sustainable programs and practices.

Sustain Winona

In 2007, seven of Winona's largest institutions formed Sustain Winona as an alliance of public and private, government, and educational institutions committed to working together to achieve on a wide range of sustainability goals.

The partners are Winona State University, the City of Winona, the County of Winona, Winona Area Public Schools, Minnesota State College Southeast Technical, Cotter High School, and Saint Mary's University of Minnesota.

Winona Parks & Recreation

WSU and Winona's Parks and Recreation Department partner on many environmental and sustainable initiatives during the year, including Earth Day, the Winona Eco Challenge, and general programming for kids and adults.

Frozen River Film Festival

The Frozen River Film Festival has been partnering with WSU since 2006. Beyond the use of WSU's facilities, the partnership offers opportunities for student interns, faculty commitments, and media collaboration.

Student interns have been able to learn about all aspects of organizing a film festival, from choosing the films to collecting the tickets at the door.

Numerous faculty members have been able to incorporate films into their class discussions; many have designed service-learning components into their classes.

Student-produced films have also been included in the festival. Since 2008, FRFF has been a key partner for our University Themes each year.
