Equipment Rentals
The WSU Outdoor Education and Recreation Center has a variety of camping, climbing and other outdoor equipment available to rent.
WSU students, WSU employees and community members alike can rent equipment. It’s an easy and affordable way to enjoy all the natural beauty around us and try new outdoor recreation activities.
On Jan. 13, equipment rentals for ice climbing will begin.
Make a Reservation
Email michael.henderson@winona.edu at least 48 hours in advance of the date you want to pick up the equipment. Your email request should include:
- Name of responsible renter
- Home address
- Phone number
- Email address
All individuals named on the contract are required to be present when the rental is picked up.
Keep in mind that reservation requests do not guarantee an order. Equipment is subject to availability, and you should watch for an order confirmation email.
You will need to make the full payment for your rental prior to pick-up. You’ll receive an online invoice from the OERC with payment instructions.
The WSU OERC reserves the right to refuse service or revoke rental privileges to any individual(s).

All rentals are listed at the daily rate.
WSU students receive 20% off the daily rate. If you rent 10 or more of the same item (for example, 10 pairs of snowshoes or 10 sleeping bags), you’ll receive an additional 10% discount.
All rentals are subject to Minnesota state tax of 7.375%.

Cancellations & Refunds
Please be sure to cancel or modify your rental well in advance of your scheduled pick-up time.
You will not receive a refund if you do not cancel your order or pick up your equipment within 7 calendar days of the start of the reservation.
You will not receive a refund if you modify your order to decrease the value of the original order within 7 calendar days of the start of the reservation.
We will review refund requests on a case-by-case basis if we have made a mistake on your order or there is some other legitimate reason.
Equipment Check-Out Procedures
You can pick up your OERC Rentals during the following hours:
- Monday-Friday: 5-9pm
- Saturday: 8am-6pm
- Sunday: 8-10am, 3-6pm
All equipment rentals are picked up at the Wabasha Recreation Center.
Photo ID is required at the time of pick-up.
You will also have to sign the Rental Agreement & Liability Waiver before taking any equipment.
Before leaving the OERC Rental Center, you are responsible for inspecting all equipment carefully and bringing any missing or damaged equipment to an OERC staff member's attention.
Make sure any discrepancies are noted on the rental agreement. Failure to note any discrepancies may result in a fee for damaged or missing equipment.
Please ask an OERC staff member for help with inspection and instructions on how to properly set-up the equipment if you are unsure.
Equipment Check-in Procedures
Equipment must be returned within 1 hour of the time and date listed on your contract and at least 1 hour prior to closing. If you make your returns later than 1 hour past the check-in time, you may incur a late fee.
An OERC staff member will take the equipment from you as part of the check-in process. Please do not simply leave equipment unattended in the OERC.
If you leave equipment unattended at the OERC during closed hours, you will be charged a $25.00 fee regardless of the reason. The renter will be responsible for all replacement costs at full retail prices if the equipment is lost or stolen while left unattended.
Equipment Damage
Rental fees do not cover any portion of damages to equipment. You will be charged for equipment that is dirty, damaged, or missing, up to and including the cost to replace such equipment at the current equipment costs, regardless of the age of the equipment.
If you bring back damaged equipment or lose equipment and this affects another person’s order, you will also be charged the entire cost of their rental order.
Late Fees
Late fees are assessed at 1.5 times the daily rate for each day the equipment is not returned- including holidays and closed dates.
This is strictly enforced because you jeopardize another person's trip if you don’t return equipment on time.
If you are late returning equipment and this affects another person’s order, you will also be charged the entire cost of their rental order.
