Students will develop a depth of knowledge in music theory and develop skills in musical literacy, aural discrimination, musical analysis and composition.

• Objective 1: The student will be able to effectively read music at an advanced level and notate music both by hand as well with music notation software.
• Indicator 1: The student will produce two analysis projects in second year theory courses that demonstrate their ability to interpret the score.
• Indicator 2: The student will produce theory assignments such as realizing figured bass and creating original compositions demonstrating handwritten and computer-based notational skills.
• Objective 2: The student will be able to aurally discern intervals, melodies and chord progressions, as well as rhythmic patterns and meter. In addition, the student will be able to sing intervals and scales, as well as sight sing using the movable do solfeggio system.
• Indicator 1: The student will successfully complete computer-based and in-class ear training assessment instruments in the areas of melody, harmony and rhythm.
• Objective 3: The student will be able to fully analyze scores from various stylistic periods examining melody, rhythm, harmony, form and instrumentation.
• Indicator 1: The student will produce two analysis projects from differing style periods in second year theory courses.
• Indicator 2: The student will complete course assessment, demonstrating an understanding of how melody, rhythm, harmony, form and instrumentation are used to effectively analyze music from the various stylistic periods.
• Objective 4: The student will be able to compose original works using at least two different musical forms.
• Indicator 1: The student will compose a minimum of two musical works that demonstrate an understanding of music theoretical concepts and various musical forms.

Students will comprehend musical elements’ evolutionary changes through the history of music and gain knowledge of significant contributors (composers, performers, etc.), genres and repertoire. In addition, through their knowledge of music history, students will develop the skills needed to critically evaluate, compare and make personal decisions regarding music from the various stylistic periods.

• Objective 1: The student will be able to provide oral and written descriptions and comparisons of musical characteristics, innovative musicians and the various genres and repertoire from currently recognized stylistic periods including the process of transition.
• Indicator 1: The student will actively engage in class discussions clearly demonstrating their ability to describe and compare the characteristic styles, musicians, genres and repertoire as they relate to the evolution of music through time.
• Indicator 2: The student will complete course assessment instruments demonstrating knowledge of as well as their ability to compare and describe the characteristic styles, musicians, genres and repertoire as they relate to the evolution of music through time.
• Objective 2: The student will be able to critically evaluate and make informed personal decisions about music from varying stylistic periods based on specific criteria developed within the music history sequence.
• Indicator 1: The student will produce a paper critically evaluating an aspect of music history.
• Indicator 2: The student will substantiate with specific criteria and examples their personal opinions regarding issues in music history during class discussion.

Students will develop knowledge and understanding of:

1. The role music plays in culture and all human life, both in western societies and throughout the world
2. The variety of musical systems that exist in the world

• Objective 1: The student will be able to provide oral and written descriptions of the role of music in culture.
• Indicator 1: The student will demonstrate comprehension of the role music plays in culture through class discussion and a written evaluation of a musical culture.
• Objective 2: The student will demonstrate understanding of several representative world music systems by describing performing context, function, treatment of musical elements, characteristic traits, instrumentation, genres and theoretical concepts from the specific music cultures they have studied.
• Indicator 1: The student will complete course assessment instruments demonstrating knowledge and understanding of performing contexts, functions of music, treatment of musical elements, instrumentation, characteristic traits, genres and theoretical concepts from the music systems covered within the world music course.

Students will develop technical and expressive skills as soloists and performers in ensemble settings as well as develop the tools and processes needed for independent learning.

• Objective 1: The student will be able to effectively read music at an advanced level and notate music by hand as well as computer.
• Indicator 1: The student will maintain an ongoing audio tape and/or videotape record of performance abilities, with at least one sample from each semester of applied study to be included in their portfolio.
• Indicator 2: The student will document their performances in an ensemble or as a soloist by keeping copies in their portfolio of all programs from concerts and recitals in which they have participated.
• Indicator 3: Each semester the student will successfully perform a jury for selected music faculty demonstrating progress toward advanced technical and expressive skill in their chosen performance medium. Jury sheets will be placed in each student’s portfolio documenting this progress.
• Objective 2: The student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the processes necessary to independently prepare a piece for successful performance.
• Indicator 1: The student will effectively communicate within the applied lessons the steps, procedures and thought processes necessary to independently study and prepare a piece for performance.
• Indicator 2: The student will demonstrate through evidence of progress during applied lessons the ability to independently prepare lesson materials and communicate their successful practice strategies and habits.

Students will have a general understanding of the capabilities of computers in the area of music and experience working with basic music computer processes.

• Objective 1: The student will acquire basic skills in music technology by completing assignments in theory and other appropriate music courses using computer applications, MIDI and other technology.
• Indicator 1: The student will demonstrate basic technology using sequencing and notation software and other digital media appropriate to the music industry through theory class compositions and other appropriate music course work.
