Fulbright Programs
The J. William Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the US government. Its goal is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
About 8,000 grants are available in more than 160 countries worldwide. To date, Fulbright has provided opportunities to study, teach, or conduct research to approximately 370,000 participants.

What is a Fulbright?
A Fulbright grant is a financial award you can use overseas for an academic purpose, while representing the US as a cultural ambassador.
The goal of the Fulbright Program is to increase mutual understanding between people of the US and people of other countries through exchange.
What can I do with a Fulbright?
Fulbright grants have been used to conduct research, pursue graduate degrees and teach English abroad. Each country chooses which kind of awards they would like to offer.
How competitive is it?
Fulbrights vary in competitiveness. Just like the types of awards offered, each country chooses how many spots they will fund. This means that some countries have 50 applicants for one award, but others may only have two or three applicants for one award. Don’t assume it’s too competitive to apply!
Am I eligible to apply?
The US Student Fulbright program is open to graduating seniors, recent graduates, Master’s and doctoral candidates and young professionals. Applicants must be US Citizens who will hold a Bachelor’s Degree by the grant start date.
When should I apply?
Fulbright applications need to be prepared in advance. If you’re thinking about going abroad in Fall of 2025, applications are due in Fall of 2024. The Winona State University campus deadline is usually set for September.
Fulbright awards are for an experience abroad after you graduate. You can submit your application as an undergrad, but you must complete your degree before funding would be awarded.
How much is the award?
Again, this varies by country and your proposal. Grant benefits do include round-trip airfare, a monthly stipend and insurance. Other possible benefits include dependent support, research allowance, tuition, language lessons, enhancement activities and disability-related accommodations.

Scholar Grants
The Fulbright US Scholar Programs offer opportunities for American scholars, artists and professional to conduct research, lecture, and/or consult with other scholars and institutions abroad.
Winona State Faculty who are interested in applying for a Fulbright US Scholar Grant should review the grant opportunities, program requirements, and deadlines at cies.org. Use the Awards Catalog to search by region, country, and/or discipline.
Teachers & Professionals
The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Programs offer opportunities for professional development including taking/leading courses, visiting/observing schools, and/or collaborating on projects in a limited number of countries. There is a Semester option as well as a Short-Term (2-6 weeks) one.
The Fulbright Specialist Program is for US faculty and professionals who are able to serve as consultants on curriculum, professional development, institutional planning, and related subjects for 2-6 weeks at select international academic institutions.
