We have provided a number of resources to help you successfully navigate through the Early Childhood & Elementary programs. You will find information about expectations of students, the MTLEs, diverse opportunities, career tips and much more.


Undergraduate Students

Academic Progress: Students are responsible for their academic progress and maintaining the minimum academic requirements for graduation. However, our faculty will work to support you and get you back on track so that you can achieve your goals.

Admission to Undergraduate Programs: Admission into the teacher education program is competitive, so students should go beyond the minimum expectations. Resources are provided to help students remain informed about the admission process.

Career Tips & Resources: Information about how to market your teaching degree and search for a job after graduation is provided.

Diversity Opportunities: Students have a variety of opportunities to interact with diverse individuals while at Winona State including Miller Mentoring, Kids First, the St. Paul Immersion Experience and travel abroad.

Early Clinical Documentation Form (PDF): Students applying in Fall 2015 or later will need to complete an early clinical experience. This requirement could be satisfied by taking WSU EFRT 100 or WSU SPED 300. Or, the student could complete a comparable work or volunteer experience that involves working with children following high school graduation.

Education Minnesota Student Liability Insurance (EMSP): Students must purchase Education Minnesota Student Liability (EMSP) insurance before beginning student teaching. Instructions to obtain EMSP insurance are provided.

Education Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA): All WSU education students must complete the Education Teacher Performance Assessment, a process to assess whether they are prepared to enter the classroom and teach effectively.

Expectations of Students: Students are expected to follow the WSU Academic Integrity policy & encouraged to join clubs, volunteer and get to know their academic advisors.

Licensure: Information about applying for a teaching license in Minnesota and other Midwest states is provided.

MTLE: All WSU teaching programs require the essential academic skills tests, pedagogy and content area tests. The essential academic skills exam(s) need to be passed prior to admission into the Teacher Education Program. The pedagogy and content area tests should be passed prior to student teaching.

Scholarships & Grants: There are several federal grants and WSU scholarships specifically for teacher education students, and students are encouraged to apply.

Teacher Education Expense Table (PDF): We have provided an expense table to help you budget accordingly. It is not meant to be exhaustive, and these figures could change at any time without notice. Also, keep in mind that costs such as test preparation materials are not included.

Teacher Education Handbook (PDF): This handbook contains a variety of useful information about program admission, the MTLEs, diversity opportunities, field experience, student teaching, licensure, career tips, and more.

WSU College of Education Background Check Policy (PDF): All teacher education students must complete a background check before participating in any field experience including but not limited to student teaching.
