Planning your career and finding a job can seem like an overwhelming task, and many students have questions along the way. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions about the job search process.
What types of career services are provided in Rochester?
WSU-Rochester has a career counselor available on a daily basis who can help students with:
- major and career exploration
- creating resumes and cover letters
- developing interviewing skills
- searching for jobs or internships

How can I get help with creating or updating a resume?
You can set up an appointment to meet with the WSU-Rochester career counselor by calling 507.285.7100 or emailing WSURStudentServices@winona.edu.
You may also stop by the Student & Campus Services Offices in SS 128 to make an appointment or see if there is walk-in availability. Please bring a copy of your current resume if you have one.
The WSU Career Services website also has some online resources to help you write resumes and cover letters.
What can I do to start the job or internship search process?
The best place to start is Handshake, WSU Career Services’ online job database where students can:
- search for jobs and internships
- sign up for career events
- upload their resume
- connect with employers and more
How can I develop interviewing skills?
Mock interviews are a great way to get practice interviewing. You can set up an appointment to meet with the WSU-Rochester career counselor by calling 507.285.7100 or emailing WSURStudentServices@winona.edu.
Appointments can also be made in-person at Student & Campus Services Offices in SS 128 to make an appointment or you could see if there is walk-in availability.
The online tool Interviewing.com is another way to practice job interviews because you can access it anywhere you have internet service.

What resources are available for me to explore my career options?
If you aren’t sure what direction you want to take your career, the best place to start is with the self-guided Focus2 online self-assessment.
You can also meet with the WSU-Rochester career counselor to complete a self-assessment to help you identify career options that may be a good fit. Assessments include the Strong Interest Inventory (SII), Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and StrengthsQuest.

For career research, WSU Career Services recommends a number of online tools to help you learn about careers, salaries and job outlook. Two good places to start are the Occupational Outlook Handbook and O*Net Online.
