Math Education Program

The Math Education Program at WSU prepares future educators who specialize in the various fields of math.

We offer both our major and minor in collaboration with the College of Education. Students will take courses in mathematics and statistics, as well as the Professional Education Sequence.

Unlike other math programs, the Math Education program requires admission to the College of Education.

You might be a Math Education major if:

  • You enjoy working through math problems (Sometimes, you might even do the odd problems just for fun)
  • You can communicate the subject matter to younger generations
  • You enjoy coaching, working with students, and still love waking up with hope for a snow day
  • You get excited about graphs
  • You choose to do your math homework first

Secondary Mathematics Major

This major is a great option for those who know that they want to teach math at the middle or high school level.

You will take a variety of math classes in subject areas like calculus, algebra, statistics, and theory. In addition, you’ll complete teacher-specific courses about teaching strategies, philosophies, and classroom management.

In addition to coursework, you will also complete a semester of student teaching. This opportunity will give you hands-on experience in the classroom, so that upon graduation you’re prepared to teach a class of your own.

Use these resources to help you plan your semesters, or just get an idea of what your schedule may look like as a Math Education student.

Middle Level Mathematics Minor

This minor is perfect for those majoring in another Teacher Education Licensure program and want preparation to teach middle school math.

The Middle Level Mathematics minor will give students additional expertise outside of their major. The courses required for this minor provide future teachers the foundations they need to be successful math teachers.

Use these resources to help you plan your semesters, or just get an idea of what your schedule may look like as a Middle Level Mathematics minor.
