Strategic Communication

Strategic communication is an essential part of every organization’s success, and employers need responsible, equity-minded communicators in every industry.

These leaders understand and appreciate the diversity of our world. They also help make the messages they produce and the workplace they inhabit more inclusive and equitable.

The need for communication experts has never been greater. That’s why WSU's Mass Communication Department created the online Master of Arts (MA) in Strategic Communication.

Program at a Glance

The Strategic Communication MA comprises 33 credits. This degree can be completed in as little as two years.

You can begin the program in the fall or spring semesters.

Coursework will be delivered entirely online. You’ll do a mix of individual work and group projects.

You’ll also submit assignments and respond to discussion posts on D2L, our online course management tool.

Many courses in this program will focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues facing the strategic communication fields.

Most of your courses will be asynchronous, meaning you can complete coursework when you want to.

Some courses may be synchronous, meaning class is taught at a specified day and time each week.

What You'll Learn

This program emphasizes the importance and responsibility of strategic communicators.

You’ll also learn how to:

  • predict, describe, and evaluate the impact of strategic communication on society and the world
  • apply strategies based on concepts and theories to solve communication problems
  • use modern tools and technologies to communicate with various audiences and stakeholders
  • understand how certain messages should be communicated under different cultural and social contexts

Applications to begin the Fall term are due July 15. Applications to begin the Spring term are due Nov. 15.

Before applying to the Strategic Communication master’s degree, you must meet the following requirements:

  • A completed undergraduate degree, from an accredited institution, in:
    • Advertising
    • Communication Studies
    • Marketing
    • Mass Communication
    • Public Relations
    • Other subject areas as approved by the Program Director
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Access to a laptop or desktop computer and reliable internet connection

Professional work experience in advertising, communications, marketing, public relations, or other related fields is strongly recommended.

To apply for enrollment in the Strategic Communication master’s degree, you must submit two applications.

Apply to WSU’s School of Graduate Studies

The first thing you need to do is apply to the School of Graduate Studies at WSU.

Complete an online application, pay the application fee, and submit your official transcripts to be considered.

If you’ve been admitted to WSU’s School of Graduate Studies, then you’re ready to move on to the final step.

Apply to the Strategic Communication Graduate Program

The final thing to do is apply to the Strategic Communication graduate program.

Within your online application, please attach the following items as PDF files:

  • Current resumé
  • One letter of reference/recommendation from a current or former employer or professor
  • A written personal statement, no more than two pages in length, that:
    • introduces yourself to the selection committee
    • explains how your academic and career experiences shaped your desire for this graduate degree
    • describes your post-graduation career goals and/or plans
