Dining & Meal Plans

All students living in the residence halls (except East Lake Apartments) are required to be on a meal plan.

Meal plans have two components:

  • a designated amount of meals
  • Dining Dollars

Dining Dollars are prepaid dollars on the student's Warrior ID that can be used at any campus dining location. All purchases used with Dining Dollars are tax-free.

If you would like more information on Dining Services, contact Housing & Residence Life at housing@winona.edu.

Warrior Anytime Plan

Best Value

Available to Main Campus Students

The Warrior Anytime Meal Plan offers unlimited access in the Jack Kane Dining Hall.

Only students living in the residence halls on Main Campus can choose this meal plan.

10 Meals Per Week Plan

Available to All Students

With this meal plan, students get 10 meals per week in the Jack Kane Dining Hall.

You also get a set amount of Dining Dollars to spend at other areas on campus, such as Zanes and Einstein's.

Meal plans begin on Friday and end on Thursday.

For example, if a student chooses a 10 Meal Plan, they will have 10 meals to use for that week.

If they only use 9 meals by the end of the week (Thursday), they will lose the remaining meals.

Another 10 meals will be available starting on Friday.

14 Meals per Week Plan

Available to All Students

With this meal plan, students get 14 meals per week in the Jack Kane Dining Hall.

You also get a higher amount of Dining Dollars to spend at other areas on campus, such as Zanes and Einstein's.

Meal plans begin on Friday and end on Thursday.

Block Meal Plan

Most Flexible

Available to East Lake & Off-Campus Students

The Block Plan can be used in the dining hall as well as at any retail location on campus such as:

  • Zane's in Kryzsko Commons
  • Somsen Café
  • Einstein Bros Bagels/Caribou Coffee in Krueger Library

Unlike the residential meal plans, a Block Plan does not limit how many meals per week that can be used.

For example, you could use 3 meals one week and 14 meals another week. Each meal is simply deducted from your overall balance.

Students can choose to purchase one or multiple Block Plans at a time.

Block plans transfer from Fall to Spring semester. However, any unused meals left at the end of Spring semester will be forfeited.

If you run out of meals at anytime during the year, you can purchase another block plan via your housing portal.

Let's Dig In

Learn more about how meal plans work at WSU, including:

  • how sign up for a meal plan
  • how to change a meal plan
  • how we can accommodate any special dietary needs

We have a variety of options to meet your dining needs while on campus. These options are based on where you live.

All charges for meal plans are added to the student’s account approximately 1-2 business days after choosing a meal plan.

Dining Dollars are a fund of money that is included with most meal plans and gives the flexibility to eat at other dining locations on campus. Each purchase made with Dining Dollars is deducted from the total balance. All Dining Dollars purchases are tax-free.

Unused Dining Dollars will carry over from Fall Semester to Spring Semester. Dining Dollars not used by the end of Spring Semester will be forfeited. Dining Dollars are non-refundable.

Additional Dining Dollars can be purchased at any time on your Housing Portal. Once you request additional Dining Dollars to be added to your account, those funds will be loaded onto your Warrior ID and the charges will be added to your Student Account

Purple Pass is a program that allows you to load money onto your Warrior ID card and use it like a debit card at a variety of places on campus and around Winona. Purple Pass is not tied to your meal plan at all. It is an additional fund of money that you control how much to deposit, and it always carries over from semester to semester.

Residential meal plans are only to be used by the owner of the meal plan. You are not able to swipe a meal for someone else to use.

For the Warrior Block Plans, once you use your plan it is no longer refundable. Block plans can be canceled only if no meals or Dining Dollars have been used.

  • A Block Plan may not be canceled once a meal has been used
  • Dining Dollars are non-refundable whether or not any amount has been used
  • Any remaining meals and/or Dining Dollars from Fall Semester will automatically transfer to Spring Semester
  • Any unused meals and/or Dining Dollars at the end of Spring Semester will be lost and will not be refunded
  • Credit will not be given for any unused meals

Students living in on-campus housing will select a meal plan through the housing application process via their Housing Portal.

Students living off-campus can request an Off-Campus Block plan on their Housing Portal. Simply login to e-services with your StarID and password and click on "Housing & Dining". Once you are logged in, select "Manage my Meal Plan" from the menu on the top or drop down on the left side of the page.

Once a meal plan is selected, it will take 1-2 business days to be added to your account for use.

Residential Meal Plan

Students who want to change their meal plan can submit a request via their Housing Portal.

Students can increase their meal plan at any time throughout the semester.

Students are able to decrease their meal plan by 4:30pm on the 10th class day of the semester:

  • Sept. 2, 2022 (for Fall Semester)
  • Jan. 20, 2023 (for Spring Semester)
Once meal plans begin, meal plan change requests will only change the amount of meals per week (Warrior Anytime, 14, or 10)--the Dining Dollar amount of your original meal plan selection will remain the same. For instance, if you signed up for the 14 meal plan and want to change to the 10 meal plan, your meals will be changed to 10 per week, but your Dining Dollars will remain at the original amount of the 14 meal plan.

If you run out of Dining Dollars, you can always add more to your account on your Housing Portal.

Block Plans

Changes can be made to a Block Plan if the plan has not been used. If any meals have been used, the Block Plan cannot be changed or canceled.

If you require a special diet, the Chartwells staff is ready to help you find foods you can enjoy.

Contact Stacy Gallahue, a registered dietitian, at stacy.gallahue@compass-usa.com to set up a meeting. During this meeting, a conversation will focus on the following to develop a plan that fits your dining needs:

  • your specific allergy or medical condition
  • a review of menu items and ingredients used
  • specialty products you may need
  • cross-contamination concerns

Students can track their meals used and Dining Dollars balances online through GET Funds.

Throughout the academic year, weekly dining advisory meetings are held. These meetings are student-led through the Residence Housing Association and include:

  • student representatives from all of the residence halls
  • Student Senate
  • Director of Housing & Residence Life
  • Director of the Student Union
  • individuals from the Dining Services Management team

RHA holds hall meetings every Monday evening where students have an opportunity to submit questions and comments to Chartwells Dining Services staff. These comments are presented at the dining advisory meetings and as a team we address the issues and opportunities to help educate students on how to get the most out of their dining experience here at WSU. Updates and upcoming dining events are also shared.
