Graduate Nursing Program Admission

Getting a graduate degree is a great opportunity to advance your nursing career. To gain admission, you want to make sure you have a strong application.

Before you can be considered for admission into the Graduate Nursing Department, you must first apply for admission to the School of Graduate Studies at WSU.

In your application, note which Graduate Nursing program you want to enroll in.

If you’d like to start taking courses before being formally accepted to WSU Graduate Studies, you can apply as a Non-Degree Seeking Student.

If you were previously enrolled in graduate courses at WSU, you may be able to use the re-enrollment process to continue your degree program.

Once you are accepted into Graduate Studies, then you will apply to the Graduate Nursing program.

Admission Criteria

For all Graduate Nursing degree programs—including the RN-Graduate Pathway—you must meet the following requirements:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale
  • Minimum of one-year clinical nursing experience
  • Current, unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse (Minnesota licensure is typically required for all clinical courses. Other state licenses may also be required for clinical experiences in those respective states according to state statute.)

If you’re an applicant whose first language isn’t English, you may need to complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to qualify for admission.

Apply as a Graduate Non-Degree Seeking Student

You can apply to be a Degree Seeking Student if you’ve earned your bachelor’s degree in nursing but you don’t intend to pursue a master’s degree,

To get a jumpstart on your degree, you may seek Graduate Non-Degree Seeking Student status.

This allows you to take undergraduate or graduate level courses —or a combination of both— on the Winona and Rochester campuses before you apply and are formally accepted to a graduate nursing program.

A maximum of 12 graduate credits can be earned as a Degree Seeking Student. These credits can be applied toward graduation requirements once you are accepted into the Graduate Nursing program.

Admission as a graduate non-degree seeking student does not mean guaranteed admission to a graduate degree program. You must still meet all admission requirements and formally apply to WSU Graduate Studies and the Graduate Nursing program.
