Scholarships

Scholarship opportunities available to WSU Geoscience students:

The Coulee Rock Club of La Crosse, Wisconsin provides scholarships for students majoring in geology with interests in graduate education in geology and/or paleontology and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. This scholarship is one of the longest-standing at WSU.

In 2014, Samuel and Shelby (Frost) Plitzuweit, Douglas Portis and Carl Matzek established the Geoscience Alumni Leadership Endowment (GALE) fund to inspire and support students majoring in Geoscience at Winona State University.

GALE is designed to enhance learning by providing funding opportunities for motivated students through an application process focused on faculty directed independent research. These opportunities include, but are not limited to, research and field expenses that would typically not be covered by funds from WSU. These supplemental research funds could include travel, specific research needs and other expenses that provide an extraordinary learning experience for students. Funds may also be awarded for travel to professional geological conferences, field camps, expos and other avenues that benefit students' educational or professional development.

In 1980 the faculty and current students initiated a phone-a-thon to encourage the first decade of WSU Geoscience graduates to contribute to an endowment to support future students in the department. At the time many of our graduates were working in the oil industry and many of their employers were offering matches as generous as three-to-one on contributions. Over subsequent years the generosity of our graduates led to the establishment of an endowment that now supports student scholarship, our Earth Talks speaker's series and celebrations and awards such as this one today. The Geoscience Alumni Scholarship is typically awarded to a current Geoscience student who has demonstrated excellence in the classroom, a commitment to the Geoscience Department and Geology club, and shows great potential as a future geoscientist.

The Bryan and Evan Sage Scholarship is created for students who have declared a Pre-Med or Geoscience major at WSU. The student must be enrolled full-time in good standing at Winona State University and be a declared Pre-Med major or Geoscience major, and must demonstrate strong academic achievement, as evidenced by a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship award amount is $1,400.
