Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)

The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs a variety of laboratory tests, ensures the quality of those tests, and determines if a new technology is appropriate for adoption into future clinical testing.

Testing in the laboratory includes but is not limited to:

  • Detection of abnormal cells (e.g., lymphoma)
  • Analysis of enzyme activity in pancreatitis, acute myocardial infarctions, and cirrhosis
  • Identification of bacteria causing infection and evaluating its antibiotic therapy
  • Detection of DNA markers for genetic diseases
  • Processing, testing for compatibility, and distribution of blood and blood products (e.g. American Red Cross.)
